The struggles that Wetstein has endured are so overwhelming to read that the title seems miraculous. Growing up with autism before autism was on the radar. Living with mental illness--his own, but also in the family. Being bullied by kids at school and also members of his family. Never, ever happy. Wetstein is incredibly smart and got through elementary & secondary school doing very little work. He couldn't handle college. At all. He emerged into adulthood with no marketable skills. He spent more than a few years going from shitty job to shitty job and even when he had developed good cooking skills and settled into one job, he barely earned enough to live on. What saved him? Reading. Caring for other people enough to work for their rights & dignity, even when he couldn't do the same for himself. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2021 )

But it ends up being an optimistic account of how, through reading, self-reflection, and service to others, it is possible to overcome adverse beginnings and construct a productive life for oneself.
